The Benefits of doing Dry January & Tips To Be Alcohol Free for a Month

With the start of a new year, many people take this opportunity to try breaking old habits or just look at making small changes in their lives. Dry January is a chance to cut out alcohol for 31 days and be able to see the benefits of doing so. In this article, we will be looking at what Dry January exactly is, how you can get involved and what the benefits are.

What is Dry January?

Dry January is a month where many people go alcohol-free. Over the years, this trend has become increasingly popular. Due to the New Year, many of us find ourselves looking to improve our health and wellbeing as part of our resolutions. Along with Dry January, you will also find that Veganuary is also very popular, with many people vowing to give up meat and other animal products for a month as well.

Apparently in 2021, more people than ever took part in Dry January. Due to lockdown and many of us being off work, there was a large spike in heavy drinking, so in the light of the new year, a lot of individuals put down their alcohol and are participating in this trend.

In addition to it becoming a regular occurance amongst many, there are also many other reasons why going dry for a month and refraining from alcohol could be extremely beneficial.

What Are The Benefits of Dry January?

Swapping out your alcoholic beverages for an alternative for a month comes with many benefits and could help you achieve even more of your New Year’s resolutions.

For example, participating in Dry January could benefit your overall health in a number of ways. Alcohol comes with a lot of calories, meaning that you could see yourself losing some weight once you cut it out. In addition, you may find your skin will appear fresher and overall healthier. Drinking alcohol can be harsh to your skin. Alcohol acts as a direct inflammatory which will bring your blood up to the surface of your skin, which is why so many of us have rosy cheeks when drinking. After consuming alcohol, you may find that your complexion looks dry and dehydrated the next day. By doing Dry January, your skin will thank you!

Sleep is another aspect that you will see improve throughout the month of January. Whilst drinking alcohol can sometimes be used to relax you, alcohol can actually disrupt your normal sleeping cycle. Even if you do end up getting your recommended seven to eight hours, your quality of sleep will usually be brought down, leaving you not feeling as refreshed in the morning. By participating in Dry January, you will be allowing yourself to be fully rested and have more energy throughout the day.

How To Do Dry January?

Participating in Dry January is a personal experience and can be done in a number of ways, whatever suits you. There is no precise rulebook which you have to follow, so completing the month in a way that fits your lifestyle is a must.

Set Yourself Up For Success

Whatever ‘success’ looks like for you, it’s important to set yourself up for realistic goals. A good way to do this is before starting the month, try and have some of your favourite non-alcoholic beverages to hand, so instead of reaching that glass of wine at the end of the day, you can reach for a nice, chilled glass of kombucha. This can be a stand in for your normal end of day serve and will help you wind-down after a long day.

Talking About It!

Talking about your journey and setting goals for your own personal Dry January is a must. Not only will it leave you feeling more inclined and confident about this month, but also, you may find people in the same situation as yourself. Whether it be family or friends, speaking about how you are going to complete the month, what your overarching achievement looks like and what they can do to help are all great ways to also set yourself up for success. You might even inspire some other people to do it too!

Dry January Cocktails To Try

As well as having a few of your favourite non-alcoholic drinks to hand, we also recommend some Dry January cocktails that will keep the party going throughout the entire month. Our REAL Everleaf Sour is definitely one of our simple, yet sophisticated favourites. If you are taking on both the Dry January and Veganuary challenge, then this mouth-watering serve can also easily be made vegan as well! All you will need is:

  • 10ml Everleaf
  • REAL Dry Dragon
  • 1 lemon
  • 15ml egg white (swap this out with aquafaba for a vegan version)
  • Mint
  • Chunky ice cubes

Fancy giving this serve a go? Say no more, this is how you make it:

  • Chill down your wine glass using large, chunky ice cubes.
  • Chop your lemon in half. Take the juice from half of it, and place the other half aside for later.
  • Into a cocktail shaker, add 15ml of egg white or your vegan alternative.
  • Add the lemon juice (about 10ml).
  • Add 35ml of Everleaf and a splash of REAL Dry Dragon.
  • Do your best mixologist impersonation and get shakin’ that shaker.
  • Strain the mixture into your chilled wine glass.
  • You should have a lovely, frothy, textured base in your glass. Gently top this up with enough REAL Dry Dragon to lift the foam so that it sits slightly above the rim.
  • Add another little twist of lemon on top and garnish with a sprig of mint.
